Header clearance
I wanted to get some opinions. I noticed the driver side header, one of the tubes looks to be touching or just a hair from touching the area where the 4 brake lines come together. I believe it is creating a rattle from time to time (mostly as I come to a stop I notice it). My Question, what is the best way to resolve this issue of clearance at this location? and is this a common issue with SM chevy headers?

Clearance issues are a common problem with headers, often around the upper a-arm. You can try to move the distribution block or ding the header in. Mark the header where you think it's hitting then remove the header. Support that tube on the opposite side. Lay a socket on the spot you marked then whack it with a hammer. That's the most common way of solving the problem.

Curious what headers you have? My car had Hooker Super Comps on it when I got it, they had been "clearanced" in several places. My father has Dynomax headers on his car, the only place they are tight is near the oil filter. It is a huge PITA to get the oil filter on and off. Never thought I would say this... but I cannot wait to pull those headers off of his car and put factory manifolds back on it.

I would just move the proportioning valve. (assuming that's what you're talking about.)
Headers have their place, and a car you drive mostly on the street isn't the place for them. I plan on killing about 30-40 horse power in my car by putting manifolds on it so I don't have to deal with issues like that.

The previous owner could not remember other than something "dyna" so it's possible they are Dynatechs or Dynomax. I don't think they are ceramic, but possibly painted. What do the ceramic look like vs painted? Yes it is the prportioning valve. I think it would be easier taking a hammer to the header than moving the valve.

Ceramic look almost chrome, think polished aluminum.

That's Jett Hott coated.
Ceramic are white, but have a rough textured finish. It's also been a LONG time since I've seen a set of ceramic coated headers. Probably 20 years or more.

Jet Hot is a brand of coatings, they make a number of coatings including ceramic. There are in fact quite a few headers available with ceramic coating, most manufacturers have them, and they do look like a polished aluminum with a smooth finish.
Pick any brand, Heddman, Thorely, Dynomax, etc., go to their website and you'll see they offer ceramic coated headers and what they look like. |
