Dropped the front end yesterday, Much Better !!!
I never liked the way the front end sat higher than the rear, so yesterday we tackled the dreaded job of spring cutting. We removed 1 full coil & 3/4 (1.75 total) of another.........after measuring the fender, this gave me about a 3.5" drop. The ride is better too, not as "bouncy" as it used to be......also alot firmer with less body roll. I'm very satisfied, since this did not cost me anything $$ wise. Also....the springs in the front, are not the originals and I really think they were the wrong size also. Now some pics....
Before....notice the body line going "up" towards the front http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...r/DSC03853.jpg Before http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...r/DSC03852.jpg After....front angled down now & just above the tire http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...Oct2010004.jpg After http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...Oct2010003.jpg http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...Oct2010002.jpg http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...Oct2010001.jpg |
Great job! Thats prolly as nice a mor-door as Ive ever seen.
|
Looks really sweet ! Love the stance.
|
Thanks guys! She's really starting to come along now. Next step will be replacing the missing chrome trim pieces, some window tint to hide the horrible interior that I'm saving for last and some Crager SS wheels. This thing is starting to get more expensive than the Jeep project.;)
|
I like the after look.
Don't get any ideas grumpy !! |
I didn't think I could ever like a 4 door this much. Your car is the goods, man.

Thanks Jake! I can't wait till tax return time to do some more cosmetics to her. |
What else you gonna do ?
|
All new chrome trim pieces from the front to back, window tint, 2" cowl induction, Crager SS wheels & a 3.73 rear ratio with locker. Then next year I will dedicate extra funds towards the interior. The main problem is lack of $$. Having 4 children & a wife in college, really puts a hurt on the wallet. ;)

Looks good, what size tires do you have on the front?
|
She does look alot better. Is it a small block? Maybe you had big block springs under there?
|
How's the ride now?
I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my '68... Looking for a quick fix for the front-up stance - at least until I re-do the suspension all the way around. So, is you ride better, worse, the same? How about wheel clearance...any rubbing issues? here's mine, not the best photo, but you can see the front was like yours... Nice ride...Liam.

Liam, I love your 68 .Got any more pics ,interior and under hood .I sold our 68 project a while back and really wish I could have finished it . Had to sell something to start restoring my daily driver 72 Chevy truck ,I thought my 55 Bel Air would have sold first but it refuses to leave .I thought the 68 would be a hard sell as a project but it sold quick.

I saw them and thankyou.

So , here's a question..
If you'r car has a droopy rear end like my 70 does, is it better to drop the front or raise the back? Is it just a matter of preference? Or does one way help the handeling more than the other. |
I missed this one. Great job, looks much better.

I cut the front just to get the stance better - but it dropped too low and the tires rub...so, I order the 1-1/2 inch lowering springs from CPP... But I would STILL like to get the arse up a bit. Any ideas? Shocks? |
Before we did the upgrade on the suspension, we had lowered the front and I hated the way it handled. Especially since it was pretty low and I had to be so very careful with every drive way that even was a little steep. I guess having the new suspension makes me wonder how I could have driven the car the way it was before.
|
I guess i'm the weird guy out. i like the way a car looks with the nose slightly higher in the air. but just slightly. plus somewhat helps for weight distribution on lauch. IMO
