Oil and Filter

Engine has 3,000 miles on it since rebuild.

Thanks,
Randy Waving

Not using full synthetic?

Hank70SS 01-05-2010 05:20 PM

Good choice on the filter, I use WIX filters on all our vehicles. Delo 10-40, that have the higher ZDDP? I have a roller cam so don't keep up on all the oils with high ZDDP levels. You have flat tappet?

BillsCamino 01-05-2010 05:23 PM

If you've got a flat tappet cam, I'd recommend adding some ZDDP Plus oil additive.
That's what I've been using on my flat lifter motors. The Delo & Rotella oils have changed.

Highway Star 01-05-2010 09:37 PM

Valvoline VR1 oil has been verified to have the proper levels of zddp for hydraulic flat tappet cammed engines.

I use Elgin's zddp additive.

Trophyman 01-06-2010 12:33 AM

Thanks. Not a flat tappet. Others told me the Delo is in fact the one with the higher levels of Zorro PP. :)
I just want to make sure i'm using the right stuff.

Everybody speaks highly of the Wix/NAPA filters. I got #1069

I remember back in the day buying reclaimed oil by the gallon from the grocery store!!
Oh boy......

I think the Delo 15w40 is what you want. The diesel oil is the one with more zddp.

Andy69 01-06-2010 04:28 AM

I'd listen to these guys

Hank70SS 01-06-2010 06:39 AM

Synthetic oil is good, you plan on driving it a few hundred miles a day? Seriously synthetic is good but I'm not going to leave it in my car for 2 years. So if I'm going to change the oil in the fall or spring with only a few thousand miles on it I'll stick with dino oil. Both my Chevy truck and car tell me when to change the oil and that's usually around 7,000 miles. I think dino oil will hold up quite well in the Chevelle for a couple thousand miles and cost a heck of a lot less.

Trophyman 01-07-2010 11:54 PM

Thank you all. And you're right, I will change oil once or twice a year max.
Delo it is.
Thanks again
Randy

From Scott Wheaton who has done extensive research and testing on oil's and ZDDP levels for several years now.

Shell Rotella lowered ZDDP levels in 2007 from 1500 ppm to 1050-1100 ppm. Chevron Delo ZDDP levels dropped from 1500 to 1300 ppm, 1200 ppm is the minimum for use with stock to mild flat tappet cams.

Regular Mobil One does not have enough ZDDP, Mobile One High Performance synthetic also has 1300 ppm like Delo 15-40.

Also as I mentioned don't use any synthetic for cam breakin or any engine breakin, flat tappet or roller. I have a roller cam so ZDDP levels are not a big concern for me but I do throw in a few ounces of GM EOS at oil change.

I'll post up some more from Scott soon, after I get it together and let Scott have a look. He kindly offered to review it before I post it here.

Brad Penn 20/50 is another high ZDDP oil. It,s what I use in my El Camino along with a ACDELCO filter. My valvetrain is still all original. Brad Penn is made at the old Kendall oil refinery.

Bungy L-76 01-08-2010 02:36 PM

Scott Wheaton, mentioned above and another person both tested the new Brad Penn oil. Using different labs both found the Brad Penn oil to have VERY low zddp levels. In fact he stated the levels were about the same as the genaric Wal-Mart stuff. He didn't believe the levels could be so low so he tested again and got the same results.
Summit is now selling an oil with zddp levels around 1800ppm.

russ67chevelle 01-19-2010 02:48 AM

all i have to say about brad penn is i have a big shot plate and after my dominator and nitrous issues, gas gets into oil and smells gassy! brad penn stays slippery!!! thats what alot of guys run for alcohol or nitrous cars

also i believe napa and wix filters are the same not sure thats what i heard

Hank70SS 01-24-2010 07:33 AM

Napa filters could be made by WIX, I know AutoValue house brand filters are. They're probably not the same as a WIX Gold but are made by WIX.

Trophyman 01-24-2010 11:36 PM

NAPA/Wix

Yessir Hank. NAPA filters are made by Wix. I asked the owner of the NAPA stores in my area and he said yes.

lt14life 01-27-2010 06:02 PM

Ive been back and forth with so many Oil brands and filters its crazy. So for the last year I have been using Royal Purple in the 94 Vette and K&N Oil filters, im happy . im still building the 70 Chevelle . but I will probably run the same in it.

stevestrat 01-31-2010 08:16 PM

probably should have changed the oil before 3000 miles after a fresh rebuild. just my 2 cents. I run full synthetic in all my rides with ACDELCO filters.

Trophyman 02-08-2010 03:59 PM

Steve is right

Yes Steve, you're right. It's actually been changed 3 or 4 times. Once after rear main replaced, new valve covers, after paint and after I got it home. Now I'm ready to change the oil and filter for some serious cruisin'

All the bugs are worked out now and I'm gonna take my bride of 38 years over to the coast for Clam Chowder.

But thanks for keeping me honest.

Randy
