1968 bucket headrest
Hey everybody. I am building a 68 Malibu that originaly had a bench seat. I am planing on putting buckets in and when my budget allows ( college student) addinf headrests. has anybody upgraded non head rest buckets to head rests? what is involved in this process and where did you find the mechanism?

It would be a lot easier to just get a set of 69-72 buckets that come with headrests.

http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/y...r/Parts004.jpg Bucket seats have a 2 post head rest that goes in the top of the seat where the 2 black guide tubes are mounted on top of the seat back. Not sure if all the hardware is available to do a conversion. Ok found the parts to do a conversion headrest guide tubes are $48 a pair and the head rest release buttons are $32 for 69, not sure if 68 had them. True Connections has them along with most vendors I would guess. |
Thanks for all the info! Does anyone know the diffrence between 68 and 69 head reast relaease buttons?
|
68 did not have head rests if I remember correctly. Started in 69 with head rests. The 69 release buttons are different then 70.
|
you are correct with that in 68 no head rest it started in 69
|
The option lists i have seen list A81 as the RPO code for bucket seat headrests in 1968
|
You are correct USMCm1a. 1968 Chevrolet RPO A81-7, Headrests (w/Strato-Bucket seats), 2,426 sold, 299,308 possible. My 68SS has them :)

Also remember that when changing from a bench seat, that you need a special floor pan adapter because the bench only had mounts out by the doors. The buckets have mounts in near the hump, and the bench setup floor has no place for the extra bolts, thus the floor pan adapter. You can drill the floor and use spacers or washers to level the bucket seats, but it's hard to get right. I did it.
