Help for new member
Hi Guys, I am new to the Chevelle Forum, but have been a member of the Corvette and Miata forums for years. I am in the process of trading my '67 Corvette Convertible for a '70 Chevelle SS396 Convertible and I need some help. Are there any members in the Houston, TX area that could look at a car for me? I live in Northern Nevada and was hoping not to have to fly down to Houston if a forum member was available to look at a car at a dealer and give me their opinion. Thanks, Nick

I don't know anyone in the Texas area, but if that one falls thru, you should check out this 1970.

Ok, back on subject. Would any members be willing to at least look at the website this car is on and look at the pictures and give me their opinion on what's right, but especially what's wrong with the car? The website is Collector Motors. Thanks, Nick

I didn't see anything particularly wrong with the car. It says "extensive documentation." But, no pictures of said documentation. What do they have? Build sheet? Protecto plate? Original bill of sale?
In my experience, it's too easy to forge build sheets these days. I would want the protecto plate and any paperwork with the names and addresses of previous owners. If it were my car, the chrome rear diff cover & and mufflers would be the first things to go. The rest looks very good. Is it just me, or does the bottom of the hood look blue instead of black? And the booster/master cylinder finishes don't look quite correct. But, it could be just the flash from the camera they used. Again, overall a great-looking example of a 70' SS 396 vert. Just my $0.10 and humble opinion... |
The cowl is painted blue also.Numerous things wrong under the hood.

For $70k I would expect more than a rattle can restoration.I'm sorry but that is what the chassis and motor look like. The hood and cowl should be black, hood hinges and latches should be phosphates.Wrong master cylinder and no proportioning valve. Is the tcs system there?Wrong spare wheel and the interior looks a little sloppy quality wise and there are no seat medallions. No a frame dust shields,in other words it looks to me like a lot of corners were cut on a $70k car.
|
grandsport...not sure what a tcs system is. What is an a frame dust shield? Is it just the master cylinder or is it the whole power brake booster and cylinder? Where should the proportioning valve be? What do you think about underneath the car? Believe me, I am not paying 70K...I am trading what is realistically a 55K car for a 55K car and some cash...and I sure hope they are not forum members and see this. Thanks again, Nick

Just saw your thread on Team Chevelle, and I see you have experienced the arrogant theme of the site. One of the reasons I left that place. If you can prove that is a real SS car,the details can be corrected wth some time and a little money.$55K is a decent price in my opinion.

Looks like you got most of your answers on the other site. It's missing a lot of things. Great color, but under the hood things are incorrect and like said repo dash and the dash pad doesn't fit correctly. It's also missing the proportioning valve on the master cylinder. It's in this photo on the lower left.

I would listen to these guys. Gary's 70, if I am correct, is concourse ready.

The one thing I've learned in my 66 years of life is to listen. So everything that was said on the Chevelle Tech forum and everything that was said on this forum is appreciated and filed away for future reference. I did get two volunteers to look at the car for me, and that was the purpose of starting this thread so the moderators can close it if they want. I'm not done with this forum by any means as I think I will be making the trade if the car checks out without any major issues. Minor issues I can handle...biggies like rust, bondo, bad mechanicals/electrics would squelch the deal. Thanks again for all your comments, Nick

Looks like rear control arms are not original factory boxed arms. Can't tell if the F41 frame braces are there. The tail light lenses don't appear to have any silver trim, look like base Chevelle lenses, not from an SS.
Who mounted that arm rest pad on the passenger door? Looks like shit. I don't know about the mufflers but the exhaust tips are wrong. Chevelle emblem on trunk lid is crooked. Shouldn't the battery ground wire go to alt bracket on a 70? Minor, but alt has been replaced, cooling blade should be a silver/tin color, not gold. Shouldn't dash and dash pad be interior color? |
I will say grandsport that both you and Ray have cars that many of us are envious of. And I would say that with cars like both of you have, you have the knowledge that goes along with them.
