Exhaust size for 396
I have a 66 Velle SS convert
I need new exhaust header back Anyone know if a x- pipe will fit in 66? I have a 700r4 trans If x will not fit will H ? Or am I stick with direct duals all the way back? Also pipe size, I assume stick to 2.5". 3" is too large for 396. 350hp |
2.5 will be perfect. Either an X or H crossover will fit. Magnaflow sells a header back system with an X. The fit is very good, they offer it in 2.5" & 3". Pypes also makes a good fitting 2.5" or 3" system with an X crossover. Both good quality, the Pypes system runs a little cheaper.

A 2.5" system is plenty of a baby big block. You don't want the fitment hassles of a 3"
|
I agree, 350hp little big block. 2.5" is great plenty

I was considering flowmaster super 40's
Anyone not like flowmaster? |
I don't.
But, mufflers and their particular sound is strictly a matter of taste. I personally love the Pypes Race Pros...much less restriction than any Slowmasters. Dynomax Ultra Flows are good too. |
From my experience, the flowmaster tail pipes do not fit very well and require tweaking. Their mufflers drone too much for my taste. I prefer the sound of Magnaflows or the Pypes mufflers. JMHO
|
I prefer Magnaflows. the Flowmaster drone and exhaust note just arent for me
|
I had Flowmasters on my 55 Bel Air ,the drone sound as mentioned already made me not take it on long trips .
|
I am going to change my Flowmaster this year. I to agree there is too much drone, especially on long trips.
|
What do you mean by the drone noise?
I want a nice rumble at idle and when u punch it she really wakes up |
the drone noise is a harmonics deal that makes the car feel like its humming. LOUDLY. and to me, it was annoying as hell with flowmasters
|
Think of it as being inside a drum, it will literally start to give you a migrane after a while.
|
Magnaflow it is!!!
|
You won't regret it. Very clean, and powerful sound. If you want it to be a little on the loud side, run the shortest case they offer. They used to sell a 4"X9" oval case muffler, not sure if they still do.
