Leaves!

It's that time of year again. Fortunately the freezing temps a few days ago brought down almost all the rest of them and they're dry so they burn up quickly. Got part of the backyard cleaned up yesterday after taking Susan to airport, she's back in LA now. Just need a few more days of dry weather to clean up the rest of them.

I'm getting too old for this shit, maybe I should just get out the chainsaw and get rid of some of these damn trees.

flash 11-15-2013 08:39 AM

I chop mine up and leave them there but I seem to have a bumper crop of them this year .I have mowed them three times already and they keep on coming .I am cutting several big trees which I hope will help next year .

I feeling the same way. One tree is coming down this winter. I have hauled off 3 - 5X8 trailer loads of leaves and still have more to pick up. I'm having some of my trees cut back this year. I also hate this time of year and most of the time I have to clean them up in the rain and slop.

Hey Hank, did you know its against the law to burn leaves here in Michigan?? I used to love the smell of it when I was a kid. Now with COPD I cant stand it anymore.

EDIT

Just checked Michigan laws......it says some communities allow burning leaves.......do you live in Brighton Twsp? If so, it says ya gotta get a permit to burn.

Yup, Brighton Twp. Got a permit.

We get a ton of them here. Went yesterday and bought Kathy her Christmas present. One of those back-pack type Stihl blowers. That sum-bitchin thing will make 212 mph winds. She's been blowing leaves alll over the place. Mostly just pushing them into the woods. Seem's to be working pretty good. She usally cuts them up with the mower too. This year she got a sweeper. That is a lot better than when we used to rake them.

Ken Hayes 11-15-2013 07:20 PM

Damn Tony, where'd ya fine a good woman like that?? :-)

I live on a hill in our sub and I mow the lawn real low starting in Oct and just like magic when its windy all the leaves are gone...

Ken, Tony's wife Kathy is a great girl and is a lot of fun to be around Here is a pic of her getting the Hot Rod ready for the awards at Frankenmuth last year....Trust me Kathy is the boss.

We got some much needed rain today so I may take advantage of the wet leaves and chop them up tomorrow .They chop much better when they are wet as they cant fly away as easily and the dust is not nearly as bad .I bought myself a cheap backpack blower this year to blow the leaves away from the house and out of the ditch along my driveway ,makes my job a lot better.

Ms Grumpy 11-15-2013 10:35 PM

I have a HUGE weeping willow that keeps its dang leaves til mid January. My yard is full of leaves right now, I am going to have my son mow the lawn/leaves tomorrow. But it is a pain in the butt when it snows, cause we end up racking snow and leaves. My neighbors are amazed when they see my tree as the only one in the neighborhood that has any leaves left on it. It has a mind, or time frame, of its own.

shadowgray396 11-15-2013 11:43 PM

I have a Pin Oak and it takes until spring before all the leaves come off it. Makes a mess all winter long. Not sure why I ever planted it. It was a 3" tree when I put it in and now it's 18" in diameter.

Sometimes he doesn't put the lift up high enough when working on the cars. Them steel ramps are tough on the old noggin.

We keep the grass cut as short as possible in the fall but it's not enough to blow them all away. Wish I had some woods around to blow them into. The people next door can and the people behind us and Darryl across the street but not us. Blow into piles, rack them onto a tarp and haul them to the back. Did that Friday afternoon and yesterday afternoon, hopefully we can finish today. We've picked them up with the mower but there's so many the bags fill up in a few minutes. Then you might have to drive it 200' around back, dump them then drive 200' back to where you were. Just no easy way to deal with so many leaves.

FlintTony 11-16-2013 07:22 AM

Hank, give me a second here and I'll run up to the house and see if Kathy has enough time this morning to come down to your place. I'm thinkin she can use her new toy to blow all those leaves into your neighbors yard. Problem solved.

That what it seems like all my neighbors around me do. I pickup more maple leaves out of my yard, then cherry leaves. I don't have a maple in my yard.

SS Shaun 11-16-2013 09:23 AM

i'm so glad all i have are pine trees around me :) very little leaves in my yard

My other house had pine trees, I had to pick up lots of pine needles all winter long since they were in my lawn area.

To answer all the PM's that I received on "What was Tony doing when Kathy was cleaning the Hot Rod for the awards"

Well, Tony was signing autographs for his groupies, here is a pic of one of his groupie's getting some money out of her purse to pay for the autograph. The big guy that is standing is Tony's body guard. I took the picture when I went to get him a cold beer and a umbrella to hold over his him like Michael Jackson.

Attachment 2980

The mess in front of the camera is his pop up tent that was tore down by the mob when he was picked a winner of the award.

FlintTony 11-17-2013 04:29 AM

I remember that day well Ric. You brought me a warm beer and took too long to get the umbrella, as I got a tinge of a sun-burn waiting for you. I may have to re-think your position as Chairman of the fan-club. And speaking of that, when are you going to release the financial statements for all the donations that you took in?

Still waiting Tony, guess Kathy was busy or that 212mph blower blew Kathy away. You did get her some ankle weights didn't you? She's a pretty small lady, hate to see her go scooting across the yard backwards when she fires that thing up.

Hank70SS 11-17-2013 07:01 AM

Got them all cleaned up yesterday. Then it rained and got windy overnight, the lawn behind the shed and next to the driveway is covered again. Suppose to have winds up to 50mph today, cut the lawn yesterday as short as I could. Hopefully the leaves will scoot on out of here when the winds come.

flash 11-17-2013 10:46 AM

My leaves are still laying where the trees left them due to rain delay ,weve had light rain and drizzle now for 3 days .

FlintTony 11-17-2013 05:55 PM

She should have been there by now Hank. I'll go find her and send her that way. Just a second though, I better put some new batteries in the flashlight. She gonna need it.

shadowgray396 11-17-2013 06:37 PM

Picked up another half trailer load of leaves today out of the back yard. Looks like we have about 90% of them down back there. Guess I'll try tomorrow to do the front yard since I'm on a forced vacation next week (no work). Rain is in the forecast so I'll see what tomorrow brings.

Ms Grumpy 11-18-2013 12:29 PM

We had some pretty nasty winds thru here over the weekend. The kids spent Saturday cleaning up the leaves, then the storms covered the yard again with leaves. But that darn Weeping Willow just will not give them up. It must still have at least 3/4 of the leaves still on it.

Hank70SS 11-18-2013 01:12 PM

Well we got those winds. Didn't do much in the way of cleaning up the leaves but of course we lost power around 9:30 last night. Latest repair estimate is 11:30 PM Wednesday, that better not be right. Going to have to keep the generator going at night, with lows in the 30's it'll get too cold in the house without it. Don't like leaving it running all night plus I'll go through $100 of gas.

flash 11-19-2013 11:37 AM

I got my leaves chopped up one more time ,it helped that they were still wet ,now I get to start on my mother n laws leaves when I get off work .

So sorry Hank. Any power yet ?

Hank70SS 11-20-2013 07:06 AM

We lucked out, got power back Tuesday morning. Their first estimate was 11:30 AM Tuesday, then 11:30 AM Wednesday, the 11:30 PM Thursday. Looks like they use a random number generator to give repair estimates, of course the 11:30 part doesn't seem to random.

flash 11-20-2013 08:46 AM

Glad you got your power back on .

flash 11-20-2013 11:22 AM

I got started blowing and mowing leaves at my mother n laws house yesterday ,I have never seen so many leaves in my life .I will go back today after work and chop up more ,hope I can get finished but her yard is even bigger than mine.

Hank70SS 11-20-2013 05:07 PM

Lynda picked up sticks yesterday from the winds we had. Filled the trash can 3 times and there's still more. We have some leaves that collected in the low spots, guess we'll clean them up if we get a warm day. Other than that I'm done with leaves for this year. Oh crap, I forget there's a pile on the roof I need to clean up. House is a tri-level, they collect on lower roof against the wall to upper level. They're up higher than the bathroom window.

FlintTony 11-20-2013 05:45 PM

Hank, stay off the roof! That sounds like a good job for Henry.

flash 11-20-2013 07:02 PM

Im done til the rest fall off.

shadowgray396 11-20-2013 07:14 PM

Still have a few to pick up, but now I get to trim all the trees before spring gets here. Trimming isn't to bad, it's picking up all the trimmings. Since I'm home this week and it isn't raining, I will get going tomorrow on them.

shadowgray396 11-21-2013 06:46 PM

Since I'm home this week, I got the yard cleaned up and some of the trees trimmed back. Even got the lawn mowed today. It's been cold at night. Got our first frost the last two nights, so the leaves dropped off the trees.
