Finally bought another one...
Made a deal on a 1969 Malibu 2dr hardtop today. Been chasing this car for a few years now. Pictures to follow, won't have it here for a few weeks. (Have to make to to go and pick it up.)
It will be a long term project - I am not wealthy, and my job eats up most of my time. Plus, need to finish my 72' first. Pretty much have my mind made up to build a COPO tribute. It is a factory blue car, not sure if it was glacier or Lemans blue. Will have to look at the trim tag. I really like both colors, and would be happy with either. |
Cant wait to see this one .
|
Congrats, Looking forward to some pictures.
|
Sweet I love 69s can't wait to see it.

Good for you, like everyone else, waiting for pictures.

pictures :)

It is looking like 2-3 weeks from today before I go get the car. But, the deal was made the other day. And I have title in my posession. The guy I bought it from is a family friend, and has back problems. I need to round up enough people to dig the car out and get it loaded, hence the wait time.

Congrats on the '69. But.......

Congrats, looks like it's a 4x4 sitting that high. Lol
Looks like a solid car. So whats the plan for it? |
I wish we had decent bodies like that around here. Looks pretty good. It will make a nice COPO clone.
|
Ray, it has no engine or trans in it... hence the "altitude." Plus, some dork put goofy rear shocks with coil springs in the rear. I was originally thinking COPO clone, now I am leaning towards a Factory Appearing L89 SS 396 build. I started to weigh the costs, and think the L89 would be more bang for the buck.
Tony, wish I could have stopped by your place today. Got a late start due to the rain, didn't get back home until almost 6pm tonight. Funny thing about the clean body, this car is from Wisconsin. Last registered in 1978, 67K documented miles. It is a real deal, "barn find." My only concern is the trim tag, it's not there. It appears as if someone removed it to clean underneath it. Hope I can find it in the car somewhere. The VIN is intact, and the title is legit/clean. If I can't find the tag, does anyone make new trim tags? I wouldn't want anything that didn't reflect what the car wasn't. Just a replacement for what isn't there. Any thoughts on the paint color? I am thinking it is code 55 - Azure Turquiose. I looked at some pictures of cars on Dale's site, and I think that is the color it most resembles. |
That really looks solid and before you trash those shocks let me know if they are still good .I need something under my El Camino as the air shocks leak (have since I put them on) and the Gaylord cover on back weighs it down .I have even considered air bags in the coils but would be willing to try coilover shocks.
|
I knew it didn't have an engine in it, the just look funny when they don't.
Azure Turquiose is a great choice http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/y...psbfb3dd41.jpg or Monaco Orange http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps10a93559.jpg |
John, those rear shocks are yours if you want them - free. Try them, if they work - great. If not, pitch them in the scrap pile. lol
Ray, I am going to try and get some paint chips to try and figure out what the color is. The paint is perfect on the underside of the deck lid. Should be a great spot to try and match up. |
You would be correct on the paint code 55 if it is Azure Turquiose, also there is someone out there that does make the trim tag.

Thanks Tony! That helps a bunch.
I looked for a build sheet today, no luck. All I found were mouse nests in the headliner and in behind the arm rest bases. Took more pictures to try and show the color of the car. I am almost convinced it is Azure Turquise. Am I color blind? I know it's hard to make a 100% judgement call based on pictures. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps27febeba.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps0e86eb9c.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps17e60de5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps8dcbeb2b.jpg And the axle code jives with what I found when I popped the cover... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7afe13b6.jpg |
And Ray, great news... all I need is a front seat! He didn't toss the rear like he thought he did, just the front bench. He did strip one half of the rear seat to the frame though. Also, he gave me a near mint core support. The original is pretty rough. Queston, do the 69' dashes unbolt? Or are they welded in? The lower right corner of mine is rotted off. I'd rather find a donor than have to waste time patching the one in the car.
|
The gauges come out rather easy, but the dash frame is welded to the firewall. If you want to remove it, you have to drill out a lot of spot welds.
Before you drop steering wheel, if you have an automatic, disconnect small cable that operates PRNDL or you managed to screw up it up. |
How surprising that it is in that good of condition considering where it came from. Great find. I can't wait to watch your build.
|
That car was very well kept.

Reaching out to all of the members here... if you happen accross a 69' that is picked over and just good for "parts." Please keep me in mind, I would like to try and procure a dash, or a piece of it for a patch panel. The passenger side of my metal dash is rough, particularly around the vent and glove box door hinge.
|
|
Thanks Ray, I will contact him in a few and see if he will entertain sawing out a section of the dash for me.
|
I appreciate the lead Ray, working with Rainer now to figure out the logistics.
|
If you need any help let me know. I can help with shipping if he doesn't want to do it for you.

I think I scored a mint 70' bench seat. Going to look it over tomorrow morning. I will rest a little easier having all of these parts for the car.
|
Good Luck !
|
Just got back with the seat about 45 minutes ago. It is in very good shape. Well worth the $200 and long ride to retrieve it.
|
Just picked up a rear seat, $100. Thank you CList! Going to take the best of the rear seats I have to choose from and sell what I don't use.

Usually nothing but junk on Craigslist. But, the past two weekends - it has been a "gold mine" for me.
|
I have acquired an engine block and a carburetor over the past three weeks. Trying to curb my spending, but still pick up a few things as I am able to. My money tree needs to hurry up and sprout!
I have settled on an engine build... 74' 454 block - .100" overbore, internally balalnced & lightended 4" stroke crank, Howards I-Beam rods - stock length, small dome pistons - shooting for around 10.5 - 11:1 CR, GMPP 401 casting NHRA legal cylinder heads - hoping to have enough cash to port them, a custom hdraulic roller with Morel lifters from Chris Straub, the 163 intake manifold I have - center divider will be cut down and some porting done, 3310 Holley I have - reworked by an undetermined source, repop exhaust manifolds - reworked and carved on by me, roller rockers, 71' LS3 distributor I have laying around with a Pertronix Ignitor III and a recurve kit. The goal is 525 - 550 HP @ the crankshaft. I want to run mid 11s on pump gas and G70X14 red line tires. (I think the red lines will look great against the code 55 paint - and they were an option in 1969) |
