Intake Manifold Question
 

I have a 1967 327 - 300 using an Edelbrock performer aluminum intake.
The engine was rebuilt in 2006 and the block was decked.
I have been going through intake gaskets every few years - an internal vacuum leak.
Any thoughts on what the best gasket is to seal the leak and any other advice.
A friend said since the block was decked I may need to take a few thousands off the intake?

What gasket have you been using and having issues with?

Edelbrock recommends the Edelbrock #7201 gasket...which is .060" thick. Same as a FelPro 1205.

Don't machine the intake.

Most gasket mfgs say not to use sealer..
But I use permatex aviation gasket sealer.
The brown brush on kind in the jar...not the tubes.
I have never had a leak.

I do the same...on the head side.

And if the block has been decked THAT much, there are thicker (.120") intake gaskets available.
Without any gasket, is the intake resting on the "China Wall"?

Bill - I used a FelPro last time which was about 2 years ago.
I may try the Edelbrock one this time ( 3rd gasket)
Any specific reason why I should not machine the intake?
I just want it to run well - it has not been a major issue - sometimes it will idle a little rough and if I drive for a long time and get t hot when I stop for gas it will whistle for a minute or so on start-up.

the tubes.

Who makes the thicker gasket?
My thought is to use the thickest gasket - the aviation sealer and some ARP bolts this time...

Mr. Gasket #106 is the closest port size to the Edl-1205 but is .120" thick.

If your block has been decked, that means now the heads are sitting a little lower and farther out than stock on the block. By machining the intake you will undoubtedly almost double the offset of everything ie: bolt holes, port alignments and so on. Do like Bill suggests and use the afore mentioned gaskets.

I'm a retired toolmaker and I know what I'm talking about as far as machining metal to try and make fit.

I will be installing the gaskets Bill recommend and the permatext sealant mestorod recommended.

Ditto...36 years before retiring two years ago.

44 years retired in 2008.

You can also go to the Edlebrock site and get the torque and sequence for that manifold if you don't already have them.
