15 inch Rally or Cragars

hello
I am looking at a 69 Malibu online. currently the car has 8 inch Rallys on back and 7 inch rallys on front. 245 60 15 tires on back, 225 60 15 front. I prefer all 4 wheels to be the same size. would 8 inch rallys on front work? the car has drums on it now, but if I get it, would convert front to discs.

in addition, seller has 4 cragars to go with car, 15X8 rear I believe, and 14 inch for front. again, like the rallys, I would prefer the same size all around, so maybe 8 inch in front.

whats all your opinion.? if I get car, I am leaning to just keep the rallys and try to find two 8 inch wheels for the front. the car has air shocks in back. I know it is personal preference on which wheel to use, but I assume a 15 X8 wheel in front would clear brakes and fender for steering?
thanks!

i would go with the ralley rims as is...
7'' front and 8'' rear you will have 2-diff tire sizes anyways :)

so, do most folks just run a bigger rim in back anyway? wouldn't the current tire on the 7 inch rim work on a 8 inch rim?
the cragars would come with the car, so I guess I could just sell them to offset the cost of getting 8 inch wheels in front. I assume the 8 inch 15X7 wheel would work on the front ? as far as clearance and drivabity? thanks

Yes it would work. 15x8 were on most Corvettes. 14x7" was the stock size wheels. Most guys are running 17 or 18" wheels on the Chevelles now days. I'm still stock on mine.

what is the normal back spacing on these 15 X8 rallys, they vary.? I guess I have to see what they are in back, so I put the same backspacking on fronts

Kevin, on the other site, Team Chevelle, there is a "sticky" thing in the tires and wheels section. There is about every combo of wheels and tires that have ever been on a Chevelle. Give it a look.

oh ok. thanks

stock 15x8ralley should be at 4.25''back space
note:aftermarket ralley's have different bs-available Bowtie smiley

4.25 back space on a 8" wheel is not enough for a GM A body.. 5.25 is more like it.. The Cutlass in the photos has 15x8 with 5.5 back space.. 255/60r15 tires also..

I would use stock 15x7 rallys with 225/70r15 tires.. The stock wheels are hub centric..

The Parts Place is the only company that sells correct fitting hub centric wheels for the GM A body. They only come in stock steel though..

the car has 15X8 rallys on the back, so I want to get some 15X8 rallys to match for the front

kevinw 11-05-2017 06:27 PM

now I am confused. for a 15X8 Gm rally wheel, what is the backspacing? 4.25 or 4.75?

kevinw 11-05-2017 07:35 PM

I just went on Team chevelle . those are all conflicting information on that site. so, I am still back to 4.25 or 4.50

stock 15x8'' corvette ralley's measure 4.25''
they will take a 255/60x15 tire easily
for 68 + 69 cars:
a 275/60x15 can work if the outer wheel well fender lip is rolled for clearance
a 275/60x15 will fit with a 4.5'' to 5.5'' back space rim
i've run all 3-combo's on the 68malibuBowtie smiley

vinces427bb 11-05-2017 09:23 PM

15x8 corvette ralleys can be run front and rear with a smaller tire like a 235/60x15
or a similar width 70series tire so you have clearance

kevinw 11-06-2017 07:48 PM

oh ok . the seller has 226 60 15 on front and 245 60 15 on front.
well, I just wired him the money and contacted the shipping company. lets hope a 69 Malibu shows up in my driveway sometime soon!

I personally like the style of Rally wheels.

kevinw 05-02-2018 10:50 AM

I had the 15X8 rallys I bought from Summit put on 2 weeks ago. I like the look better with the same size rally wheel all around. the tires on front are still smaller, and they are BF goodriches that are 10 yrs old. the standard franchise tire shops wouldn't mess with myk car given tires are over 7 yrs old, so had to go to mom and pop shop. the tires are like new, no cracks, and a lot of tread, so don't want to ditch them. and the letters are white, and easy to clean, unlike the new BF tires I bought new last year for my trans am that are impossible to get white. but, I like the look of 15X8 on all fours

kevinw 05-02-2018 10:56 AM

I got the 2 front 15X7 rallys off my car and want to sell them, they have trim rings, but no center hubs as I reused them when I put the 15X8 on. where can I post this for sale? thanks

pitts64 10-02-2019 09:24 AM

The 15 x 8 Chevrolet Rally wheels are for the Corvette and will not have the right back spacing for the GM A body.. They will fit but you will have bump steer issues with them. Lots of people don't worry about it and just enjoy the look. That's your call...

You want the wheel as close to the frame as possible... My 69 el Camino can take a 5.25" back space but I run 15 x 7 Rallys… I would like to have 15 x 8 Rallys with a 5.25 back space..
