SS Dash

I keep leaning toward getting an SS dash so it would clean up all the aftermarket gauges we have. Problem is the damn things are so expensive..

andy 04-19-2010 03:06 PM

I went with Big Tony's replacement dash for $359. Price seemed reasonable to me based on what's going on to make it. I'm only replacing an old SS dash so I don't need to mess with the wire harness.

See thats the problem. I would be making the move from a sweep dash putting the total cost of the conversion close to 2 grand.

You could do something custom... Here's mine.

http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/da...shFinished.JPG

That wasn't cheap either, but it was far less than 2 grand.

Hank70SS 04-20-2010 06:35 AM

It's hard to do something custom with a 70-72 sweep dash. You do see SS dash's on craigslist now and then. Even if you had to replace parts of it, it would be cheaper than buying everything new.

flash 04-20-2010 08:36 AM

I have a 72 ss el camino and a 72 malibu convertible so I have one of each dashes, but I like the sweep dash the best. It is easier to see in dark conditions with the sweep dash

I have been seriously considering one of these. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CT...0111/?rtype=10

grumpy 04-20-2010 02:46 PM

I also considered a digital dash conversion like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DAKOT...Q5fAccessories but for the sweep dash. The wife did not really care for it.

Derek, since we have a sweep dash it would require building a flat panel to mount all the new gauges. Its probably easier and may look nice if we went with the covan insert.

Different layout but still looks good. What about the dash vent of the passenger side?

That's not too bad. I don't like the white faces on some of conversions, just doesn't belong in the Chevelle.

The one i posted is not a sweep. They make one that has all the proper vents and all. I don't care for white face gauges either. Would order them with black.

Wasn't sure, round or sweep they both have the vent next to glove box on the passenger side. Only difference is the gauge pod. Up to you, I would look for a Chevelle or Monte Carlo SS dash. That's me though, I like the SS round dash. I'm sure it's going to look great whatever you decide.

grumpy 04-20-2010 07:10 PM

Thats the prob. I have looked. Even if I buy a used SS dash I have to buy a grand worth of SS gauges, trim and bezels. None of my sweep stuff will work.

Hank70SS 04-20-2010 07:39 PM

This

and this

$1100 all new gauge dash.

Grumpy ,

Comparing ebay to who? .... and is Year One a viable option?

grumpy 04-21-2010 05:04 PM

Rank,

I was comparing the ebay seller hank posted to Ground up or NPD. I don't have a year one catalog but ill look it up on line. Thanks

Dave

Rank 04-21-2010 05:45 PM

Two things on my shopping list is the SS dash and CI hood, air cleaner, etc ... reading the YearOne prices I have to turn up my pacemaker (kidding on the pacemaker) but dang, there has got to be some better prices out there.

I tried getting a catalog from OPG but they dont seem to want my biz.

Page #95 of Year One complete dash with AC vents $399 ....... plus shipping (oversized), loom and gauges I assume

You need to make up your mind, I COULD have sent you a 70 Monte dash instead geesh!

I'm sorry, at that time we were sure the sweep would be the right answer. We are in the process of restoring the sweep you sent us. Looks like were going to use the Covan insert to clean things up. Will take pics when its all done.

Hank70SS 04-23-2010 06:34 AM

Here is a Monte dash, $500 with harness. It's still in the car and looks like it's in good shape.

My brother in law went out to look at this today. The wood grains just not my thing. The same guy did have a 71 chevelle SS dash. What puzzles me is I thought all SS dash came with a tach. This one had the gas gauge where the tach should of been.

Now I'm no Chevelle expert much less SS but is this correct ?

Hank70SS 04-23-2010 09:58 PM

Tach, water temp, and ammeter gauge package were an option. SS dash had the round pods but not the gauges. That's the conversion kit I'm putting in my dash to add those gauges. The Monte dash is ok, not sure if you remove the wood grain then paint it or paint over it but a lot people put them in Chevelles.

grandsport 04-23-2010 10:47 PM

I like an SS dash.

So would something like this be all that is needed to complete the conversion ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...41761093506896

If so how out of place would these look sitting next to the rest of the 40 year old gauges ? Just wondering if the new ones would stand out like a sore thumb.

Hank70SS 04-24-2010 09:19 AM

That's the one I bought. The speedo and the clock or clock blank are the two that remain. After gently removing a little dust from mine you can't really tell the difference. The other gauges, ammeter, temp and new fuel gauge replace warning lights. The lens isn't air tight but does protect the gauges pretty good so like I said, just a little dust.

There is nothing more satisfying than reconditioning a SS Dash.

Here the dash so far and the gauge cluster. Need to do the silver outlining on the dash, polish the lens and reattach.

Any ideas? Do you have one you can share pictures of?

Sean 04-25-2010 07:19 PM

I did share two pictures, one in each post.

Hank70SS 04-26-2010 06:11 AM

Sorry, must have missed it Sean, which post?

Sean 04-26-2010 03:32 PM

whatever.....

? Sean I don't see any pictures, seriously. I just found a blank post above from you. Is that supposed to have a picture in it. I had this problem before where I couldn't see a picture in post. Happened to grumpy too a week or two ago. If that's it, sorry, but I can't see it, that's why I asked.

EDIT: I use Firefox, just tried IE, still no picture.

EDIT: Just tried another computer, no picture. Must be the blank post above because you can't post an empty reply.

Hank70SS 04-26-2010 03:50 PM

Grumpy, can you see the pictures in the 2 posts above by Sean. If I view all posts by Sean I see the 2 with links to his pictures on TC. I can't follow the links from there and can't see the pictures here in this thread. Pretty weird stuff.

grumpy 04-26-2010 05:16 PM

We had this issue before and its got me stumped. I think it has to do with linking to pictures in ones album. Here are Seans pics in the mean time http://www.chevelleforum.net/album.php?albumid=7

Hank70SS 04-26-2010 05:29 PM

Those are Sean's pictures here. Don't think they're the same ones he was trying to show, they're on TC.

Anyway, almost done with silver accents on my dash. Looks pretty good. Not hard, just takes some time.
