What color is your block?

Since we are probably going to have to replace the block, we started thinking that maybe we want to paint it black to match the car. Up until now it has been the Chevy orange.

So I thought I would ask this question.

What color is your block?

Hank70SS 05-26-2010 07:08 PM

Chevy orange. With almost everything else black I think the orange really shows off the engine. If the block is black it will tend to fade into the engine compartment instead of standing out. Depends on what look you're going for.

Ms Grumpy 05-26-2010 07:19 PM

I can't remember seeing another black car with the engine block painted black. Now, I never really paid attention, but that doesn't mean that I never saw it that way.

When we started this project last year, we were only gonna do the body, but like most men (sorry guys), Grumpy wanted more power. So we started adding things onto the motor. Like Tim Taylor used to say "More Power", Grumpy wanted as much power as we could shove under the hood, and that my bank account could handle.

Along the way we decided that we did not want alot of chrome. To make a long story short, we went with aluminum valve covers, nothing polished and shiny (unless that was the only way it came). So my thinking is that if the block is black, it would maybe give the engine compartment some depth.

Orange is the only way to go

Anything else beside Chevy Orange is a SIN in my book.

grandsport 05-26-2010 08:25 PM

My block is almost tan now,and the one in The Black Car is orange.:D

Ms Grumpy 05-26-2010 08:45 PM

I take it that orange is the popular choice.

1969SS396 05-26-2010 08:51 PM

Another orange here.

My son painted his small block in his 69 Malibu purple.....the boy ain't right.

ORange would seem to be the best fit to the car. Black chev engines are usually the later versions (center bolt type) in the eighties and nineties cars.

Ms Grumpy 05-27-2010 01:33 PM

You guys are not making this easy for me. I really like the idea of black, but now knowing it was associated with the eighties and nineties cars. oh man....

rak1 05-27-2010 02:09 PM

My Edelbrock ZZ crate engine block is black with everything else either being aluminum or having the endurashine finish since I paid extra for that. The pan is a mildon pan with the gold finished. I still need to finish the engine with braided lines, and some other things I want to add like the MSD box but otherwise I think black looks cool.

Sorry for all the dust in the photo; it most likely looks worse now since the car has been in the body shop for four months.

Now tell me Black is better than Orange....It screams, Baseball, Apple pie and Chevrolet.

rak1 05-27-2010 02:57 PM

The orange paint on the engine block really makes the black on the engine stand plate really pop!!:D Very nice motor Ric.

Derek69SS 05-27-2010 04:00 PM

Mine's blue... next one will be bare aluminum.

Highway Star 05-27-2010 09:39 PM

Orange for me.

chevelle7267 05-28-2010 04:26 PM

Chevy Orange of course!!

rak1 05-28-2010 05:31 PM

I wonder since chevy zz4 are made and painted by Chevrolet would that be "Chevy Black"?

It was so nice of you to pull your motor just to take the picture for me. Thank you.. It does look really cool.

No problem, I'll do anything to help...if you want a pic of the heater unit and or transmission I can do that as well.

Ms Grumpy 05-28-2010 06:41 PM

Cool....lol

Highway Star 05-28-2010 09:23 PM

I think that from an artistic point of view, black would make the block part of the background. If mine was black, from this angle you wouldn't even see it.

That's what I was saying. Black Firewall, black inner fenders, black frame, black rad and hoses. The engine get's lost in there if it's black too. Orange draws attention to it. Engines cost a lot, don't want it to look like it's not even there.

Not if theres enough aluminum to highlight it :)

Ms Grumpy 05-29-2010 08:48 PM

I guess Grumpy votes for Black.

Bowtie-Bri 05-30-2010 11:51 AM

orange ! :d

Highway Star 05-30-2010 03:06 PM

My buddy likes black on all his blocks...so he can't see leaks.

I told him orange is fine for me, because my work doesn't leak. :p

70SS LS-5 05-30-2010 03:26 PM

Purple :)

Since I am from Michigan also and purple engines seemed to need some moral support I had to jump in here as my first post to vote for purple. Waving

Welcome to Chevelle Forums Mike. BTW is your engine purple?

70SS LS-5 05-30-2010 04:02 PM

Thanks Hank,
Yes, the purple engine in the picture is mine.

Mike

Hank70SS 05-30-2010 04:35 PM

Mike, if you linked a picture I can't see it. We've had that problem before when people have linked pics from other sites. Hey, if you have a purple engine and that's what you like, good. If every Chevelle we looked at, looked like the last one, that would get pretty boring. Make it your own and do what you want with it. Some people will love it and some won't, as long you're happy that's all that counts.

grumpy 05-30-2010 06:54 PM

Lets see if I got this pic posting problem licked. Do ya all see this pic ?

Sweet pic!

Ms Grumpy 05-30-2010 07:07 PM

You should see the one the photographer took at the track.

Ms Grumpy 05-30-2010 07:08 PM

Grumpy actually took that one standing at the top of the stands.
