What size tires and wheels do you have?
I was just wondering if most people on this site have larger tires on the rear then on the front. I was planning on staying with the same size tires all the way around (15X7 R215) so I could rotate them. But I was thinking the extra traction on the rear might come in handy since I'm lighter on the rear and with the deep 1st gear in the 700R4 and 375's traction might be a problem. What setup do you have on your car, and does having larger tires on the rear help?

I have 225R70-15s on the front and 255R70-15s on the rear. I want to go bigger on the rear but I only have 7" wheels and I haven't dcided on what wheels I want.
|
First off, I don't have anything to do with this site. I found it when looking for fitment for my Belair. After you go through vehicle selection you can then choose diameter if you want. Then they show available wheels/tire combos that they guarantee will fit. I used this to select diameter/width/offset to have some steel wheels made and also to select a tire size. I did double check with the tire mfg site to verify rim size and cross section and measured my car SEVERAL times. Pretty handy site.

Currently I am running staggered tire sizes on 15x7" wheels:
Rear: 255/60/15 Front: 205/70/15 When I replace the front tires, I will probably get some 225s or 235s, not sure of the aspect ratio though. |
Right now I have 275-60-15 on the rear and 225 -70-15 on the front of The Black Car.
Hope this does not offend anyone.:) |
Well the 66 has the pizza cutter 7.75-14's and the 69 has 235 70-15's
|
Front 235-60-14 Rear 245-60-14 on original SS wheels.
|
235/45/17s in front and 255/45/17s in rear... went with the biggest I could fit on these wheels.
These cars see so few miles, is rotating really necessary? When I had 15s, I had them staggered too (235/60 and 255/60) which I think looked much better. I did wear out the rears faster than the fronts for some reason though... :o |
I have a set of 245/60x14 on stock SS wheels. I also have 2 275/60x15 on 8" after market wheels, look just the stock SS wheels. Sometimes I throw them on the back, sometimes I run all 4 stock wheels. I have an M20 with a 3.73 posi rear. The 14" tires on the rear are worthless for traction but look good. The 275 TA's definitely up the traction level. The 14s will spin all day, the wider 15s really hook.
I really need another pair of 15" rims though. The rear sits a lot higher when I run the 15s on the rear with 14s on the front, to much difference in the diameter of the tires. |
Fronts are 255 60 R15 and Rub in very rare instances
Rears are 275 60 R15 no problems there |
my 67 SS is 235/60/15 on front and 275/60/15 on rear all four are 8" rims.
My 70 has the same on all four wheels. |

I have 255/60/15's all around right now. Will probably go your route when I get ready to change. |
275/40/17 all around... Eventually, I'll go larger in the back...
|
Yep I'm trying to look at the pros and cons of different tire sizes. I already have two inch drop spindles up front so I'm limited to 215's. On the rear I could go larger but I’m not sure. I don't want to add more angle but wider could have some benefits. Thanks for all the help everyone.
|
I am not really sure what size were going with yet. Really depends on how much the lowering springs settle. Until that happens the 15's will stay on.
|
235/60/14 front and 275/50/15 rear
|
165R15 on Weld 15x4's up front, and 275/50/15 on Weld 15x10's out back for the street, with 10.5 x 28.5 x 15 slicks for the track.
|
205/60x15 on 15x6 AR wheels up front (24.69" diameter x 8" section width)
255/60x15 on 15x8 4.5" offset Jegs wheels on the rear for the street (29.06x10.04sec. width) 275/50x15 Hoosier DR's on 15x8 3.5" offset Weld Draglites for the track (25.86 x 10.83 sec. width) Going to pick up some 15x4 Draglites and skinnies this Spring. |
I've got 225 70 R15s on all four wheels. They were fine on the convertible. I put them (wheels included) on the Buick, because the Buick had bad tires and the convertible ones were new (and the Buick rallies are 14"). The fronts rub on the inner fenders in turns on the Buick, but not on the convertible. Odd.

They's yay wide, yay tall, "tars" mostly black, rims mostly silvery...kinda glittery, and I like 'em!

Fronts are 235/60/15

Any rubbing with the 10 inch rims in back ? |
My coupe also has 18s on it. Although it's a 1932 and the tire size is 5.25-18
My 64 convert has 15x7 stock steelies with 225/60-15 in front and 245/60-15 out back. |
My 69 has 225/60/15 up front and 275/60/15 in back. Mounted on 15x8 rallies.

All of my cars roll on the same size all 4 corners except my 68 Malibu. It has very wide rears and skinny fronts but I will change them to same someday. I like to rotate them.
|
I might be the only guy running on staggered 16X8 225's and 17X9.5 295's she used to squat a bit in the back and now she has a nice rake to her stance.
|
245/60-14 on SS rims all the way around, I also have a set of F70's redlines bias belted on 6" steel rims with poverty caps when I feel I need a change and a scary ride.
|
245/60x14 on SS wheels. Also have 2 275/60x15 on SS after market rims, 15x8, for the rear. Like Ric, I throw those on some times for a change. Need 2 15x7 for the front but I have too many wheels and tires already. I have another set of 14x7 SS wheels and tires with trim rings, no center caps, so that's 6 wheels and tires I have to store.
|
I actually want skinnier tires than the ones I'm running out back. I wonder what my car would look like with the same sized tire all the way around, like maybe a 235/60. That is a bunch wider in the front, and just a little narrower in the back. I think the back will sit a bit lower than it is right now, and the front may stay real close to where it is.
Now the question is going to be white letters showing or not. I'd like a set of BFG T/A tires, if I had those, they'd go on with the letters out for sure. |
Still trying to figure that one out. Grumpy and I don't agree on alot of things, so I told him that he could pick out the tires and rims, I just have to OK them. Not sure he is liking that one. lol

I think an additional question would be "what do you think looks good and handles best" ... and personally I would go with the big and littles on rallys. As far as rotating, I do not think that should enter into the equation but, assuming the tires (or rims) are not directional I would think flipping from side-to-side would solve any wear problems .... and, of course, the rear set should ALWAYS wear faster than the front. <wink> |
I love my Pro-Street !!!
Fat tires RULE ,in my book ! I run Mickey Thompson 33x21.5x15 LT's & front runners on the front... |
Hello everyone,
I bought an 1970 SS454 Chevelle 3 months ago and I have some doubts about some things. One doubt its about the tires. When I went to states to take a look to the car it has a F70-14 non radial tires. So the seller said me he's gonna change the tires for me but when the car arrives to Spain last month I realized he put "BF goodrich radial T/A 225/60R15" on the 4 wheels, so put a smaller size. All the people is saying me to put again a 70 size cause the car will run better and I'll save some gas too. What do you think about it? |
I have a 295/65/15 drag radial rear and 26 x 6 front. looks awesome in my eyes.
