Steering wheel resto

Among the hp in my stqble is a 59 sedan delivery of which I found an original '59 Impala steering this past week ... in need of restoration. My question is has anyone done a wheel resto and what product did you use. Por 15 sells a kit but I really dont need all the ancillary stuff like saw blades and sand paper but I definately need the filler or something else that would work on plastic. I was thinking JB Weld might work but not sure.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'll make sure Ray Barnes sees this. He's repaired a few and knows all about welding and filling plastics.

Thanks Hank. No rush, I have a "to do" list that is 5280 feet long LOL

Ok, I'll let him know to take a look. He doesn't internet at home right now so he can't get on very often.

The JB weld will fill and adhere, but it may read through later after you paint the wheel. When the wheel is exposed to extreme heat, like the sun it will expand and sometimes the material you use to do the filling won't expand at the same rate. The stuff from Eastwood seems to be the favorite for others I have talked to about this. I was fortunate to have a doner wheel in which I would cut small pieces and use a special chemical that would locally melt the plastic and let it fuse back together. Even that would give a slight witness line over time. I didn't have to paint my wheel. You can use a small amount of regular body filler to fill in low areas or scratches, just keep it to a minimum and scuff it to give the filler somethng to bite too.

Where were you Ray when we were trying to decide on restoring my old wheel. We did a lot of research, but, like I said, where were you?

Sorry I couldn't help on your wheel Ms Grumpy. Hanks usally tells me when someone needs help and I can share some of my experiences. I'm no expert in any one thing, just mess around with a bunch of things. I try to check in when I can.
Hopefully next time I'll be able to help :).

RB thanks for the git-back. Like I said earlier, I have a to-do list a mile long so this wheel resto is going to be a winter project ... I like the idea of doing a doner> I will experiment!

Thanks again.

Thanks Ray. Knowledge is power.
