Help! Id my motor

Pulled my motor out of my 72 and the more I get into it. The less I think its the original motor. From what I understand. The number to get is located on a pad located behind the altenator area. I cleaned it up and it has big number stamped T0901CKH and some smaller numbers stamped 12R504180 You can see in the picture of the number and location. Thanks in advance for the help.

couple engine pics. Impressive ha :( Notice the block was origanly red. What was the color of a stock 72?

What's the VIN# on your car. Need to do some more research but I believe the 12R504180 should relate to the car VIN. Looks like an Arlington built Chevelle. Look at the the back of the block. You'll see the casting number and casting date as well.

If the engine is not the original, how would the vin to the car help identify the motor?

He didn't say it wasn't original, he suspects it's not. If the VIN doesn't match then he'll now for sure. Or maybe it's a match and it is the original engine.

My main interest is to identify what the motor is? 305,307,327,350 etc. Need to order parts for it.

T0901CKH indicates a Tonawanda built 307 mated to a PG trans. The block casting number on the rear of the block would confirm engine type as well. There are several casting numbers for a 72 307.

VIN# 1D37F2R504180 Looks like its the stock 307

Sure does.
