Anyone painted their bumpers?

Hi, I was thinking about painting my front and rear bumpers to match the black on my 70. I viewed some pictures of a 70 rear bumper that was black, and had the black SS pad installed. It looked awesome I thought. Im not going for a restored look, but dont want the car to be cheese balled either. I was thinking maybe I could take my bumpers, which have a few dings in them, DA with like 80 grit, fix some dings like you normaly would, prime, sand, paint base and clear. Wetsand and buff...Whatcha think???

I'm running fiberglass bumpers front and rear and painted them to match. I love the look. I'm sure it would look nice if that's the look your going for.

It has been done. It isn't my favorite, personally, but yes, it can be done cleanly.

My bumpers have pitting and some of the chrome is peeling from the metal. If I get them rechromed I know they'd have to be stripped bare to get all the old stuff off. I'm going to guess you would have to do the same. You might be better off taking them somewhere that does sand blasting and have it blasted off. I'd think they would be thick enough where warping wouldn't be an issue. Then you could paint them like any other panel on a car with good primer and some filler work. Powder coating is always an option too. I had my plow frame coated years ago and it held up pretty damn good with all the salt from the roads in the winter and all the salt from the beach in the summer. It looks a lot better than my rocker panels and doors!

Sup, I guess it would depend on what you want out of it. If you want to lighten the load, then I would go with the fiberglass, heck I would probably go with the fiberglass painted anyway. That way you can take your time to have the original bumpers cleaned up and re chromed. That's what I would do.
