bad throwout bearing?????
 

Hi everybody, just put in a new muncie m22,bellhousing, clutch fork, centerforce 11" flywheel, dfx clutch,pressure plate and throwout bearing. Got about 100mi on it and one day sitting at a light, clutch in tranny starts loud groaning/growling noise... Let clutch out it goes away, strange thing is it does not do it all the time, but then again it just started doing it the last 3 rides. I'm pretty sure it's just a bad throwout bearing, just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone or have herd of a new bearing just going bad so quick?

lars I don't have an answer for you but good luck finding the problem.

Bearing should not go out that quickly. Did you checked the imput shaft bearing or the imput shaft bushing before you put it back together? Wonder if something is out of line when you push the clutch in adding stress you are hearing a noise from there.

If it is bad,I would definately throw it out.

I agree with Ray, it should last a lot longer but I guess anything is possible. In addition to what Ray mentioned, are you sure the clutch fork is seated into the bearing properly and not resting on the outside surface?

Yeah I thought about the input shaft but the transmission is new with all new parts and bearings +it only makes the noise when clutch is pushed in. The guy who built it said when the clutch is in nothing is turning in tranny.. As far as the fork goes I slid the bearing into place in clip on fork so I pretty sure it's where it needs to be. Well I'm gonna take tranny out this weekend and put in another bearing. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the input...

Ok so took transmission out and I saw that the tip of the input shaft where it goes into the pilot bushing was starting to gaul. Talked to my tranny guy and he said the pilot bushing was not pure brass, some bushings were magnetic cuz they had some metal in them and they get so the shaft starts to pick up the metal, gauls,then will actually start to weld itself to the shaft. Well thank god it did not get that bad. So I polished the shaft and replaced it with a pure brass bushing. Back on the road and no noise so far, knock on wood pretty sure it's fixed:banana:
