69 Chevelle L code? or worth buying?

I am still looking at a 68 Concours,
but recently came across a 1969 Chevelle project that I am also considering. It has all the dressings of an SS396, emblems (fenders/grill/back/door panels/dash etc), SS hood etc. It even has the infamous L on the Kansas city cowl tag. The bad thing is it is not a numbers matching 396 motor. The good it has a rebuilt no miles 396 not installed, new 700r4 tranny, and a ton of new parts. The car is an A/C car with no tach, needs body and paint and put together for $9000.
I guess my question is how many people would hang their hat on that L code holding up to maybe being an SS and hoping to find a build sheet. Or do you think the price is fair just as a builder as it is.

Without a build sheet... hard to prove. Sent you a PM.

I consider the L code to be strongly convincing evidence, but still not "proof" of an SS.

I am a believer in the L code and at that price the car sounds like a good deal.

The L is a mood point since it' not a matching number car if you are looking for resale value. Price sounds high for the work you say it needs.

after 2 years i am still searching to see if mine is a true SS. I also have the L on my trim tag and a lot of things that point that its true but no build sheet is what is killing me
