Restoring A Steering Column

1 Attachment(s)
I'm in the proccess of restoring my steering column on my 69 and thought I would share my findings so far on what paint to use.
I have tried several (six) different shades and gloss levels of paint and found so far that the Eastwood Under Hood black is the closest. I still have one more I would like to try, Krylon semi-gloss 9203. Trying to find something more availabe and cheaper. The Eastwood lists for $12.99 plus shipping, it would be nice to run to the store and pick up a $5 can and get the job done. I'll keep you posted on my finds. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

On a side note for the detailed type of guys...the 69's ignition lock asm has the indent for the indicator painted red.

Listen Ray, if you want to try out that Krylon paint we can pull the column from car and you can test away. If it's not quite right I'll never know, I'll be fat, dumb and happy 'cause my buddy Ray restored my column for me. Waving

When I swapped columns about 7 years ago, I experimented with an off the shelf rattle can. I don't remember what it was but it very well could have been the Krylon semi-gloss. What ever I used, it matched nearly identically.

Update: Finished painting the column and it looks great. I ended up using Rustoleum satin for outdoor furniture. I ended up getting it at Walmart for $5 a can. I'm sure you can get it at Home Depot and Lowes or any other store that carries Rustoleum products.

I'll try to get photo posted soon.

I first tried SEM Landau Black. I thought it would look good with the dash the same color. Not good. Ended up with Krylon semi-gloss. Much better.

Just got my column today and went with the Krylon semi-gloss black. Found a 4 speed column, has been media blasted with all new parts inside. Here's what it looks like. It's ready to go.

Ya, that work area is just not right! This isn't brain surgery Ray. :D

It may look clean, but I still manage to loose things in it.
