new guy with no car
hey all new guy from Sarasota Fl.
currently have no GM products but you never no what may turn up. not to say I have never owned a chevy, I have had so many I don.t think I can count them all. I like to think I have a pretty good knowledge of chevy's from 1962 to 71 with emphasis engine and transmission. now I am curious did many chevelles come equipped with 12 bolt rears in 1972. I am guessing only Big Block 4 speed cars if any? thanks. |
Actually, quite a few had them in 72'. My car was originally a 350 2bbl/th350 car and had a factory 2.73 non posi 12 bolt. I would say mostly 6 cylinder and 307 cars had 10 bolts. My 72' Monte was a 350 4bbl and had a 2.73 posi rear factory as well. Every factory big block car I have ever seen had a 12 bolt rear axle from the factory.

Welcome to the site. Not all SS-optioned Chevelles came with a 12-bolt rear end. The SS Equipment option was available with any optional V8 engine in 1972. The L65 350-2bbl engine came standard with a 10-bolt rear end and only equipped with a 12-bolt rear end when the trailer option (RPO YD1) was ordered. The other 3 optional V8 engines (L48, LS3, and LS5) were outfitted with 12-bolt rear ends so when one of those engines was ordered along with the SS Equipment option a 12-bolt rear end was used. Positraction was still an option; an open rear end was standard. However, a 12-bolt rear end, as well as Positraction, was available on non-SS-optioned Chevelles as well so the presence of a 12-bolt (with or without Positraction) is not an indication of a 1972 SS-optioned Chevelle.

I guess lots of chevelles still had the 12 bolt for 72, seems like a 12 bolt is rare as factory equipment in Novas, Camaros and full size by 72?
|
In 71' GM swapped to 8.5 10 bolts in the Camaro and Nova car lines. Not sure why they did that and left the 12 bolt in the Chevelles.

now days I am driving a couple of Jap cars, very reliable but not as fun as hearing dual exhaust.
