Wrong pcv valve in my zz427???
 

The crate motor in my 67 Chevelle has always made oil vanish. This engine has maybe 7k miles on it and is goes through a quart every 500 miles. I know these BBC engines are known for oil consumption, but seems to be a bit more than normal. Pressure test showed no issues. No puddle of oil on the floor, bone dry underneath, no blue smoke out the tailpipe either. Someone mentioned the pcv valve today and I checked it out. The previous owner put in an AC Delco 774C valve, the info sheet for the engine calls for 6487779 part number.

Am I on the right track? :beer:

I did try to find some cross-reference for pcv valves that might confirm but could not find one. I do think though that the 774 vs 779 probably has to do with how much vacuum pressure opens the valve.

See if you can get a Fram FV 178. That's the correct one for a 427 Chevy. Its a steel one that is straight. I tried to find AC 774C and it says not a valid part #.

Ken, I'll look for that Fram part. Does it matter that this is a crate zz427 motor? The part they (GM) recommends is that 6487779 one. Hey, as long as it works that's all that matters. Forgot to mention in my original post, I definitely see oil dripping off the valve so its at least a baffle issue although these are the valve covers that came with the engine. I mean i'm assuming the correct baffle would be there.

Doesn't make a difference if its crate or not. The oil dripping (I assume its by the breather on the cover) sounds like the PCV valve you have on there now isn't working like it should.

Here in the Motor City by next weekend it'll be almost 60°.........crazy weather.

Make sure your breather is working and not plugged up.
Check the baffles in the valve cover for blockage and
make sure the oil drain holes in the heads are fine.
The cv774c was used in hi perf 350 engines in the 70s..iirc.

You know that 350 mention makes sense in a way. The previous owner replaced a stroker 350 with this crate motor. I wonder if he reused the old pcv valve when he swapped. Hmm...:rolleyes:

Oh no, I meant the oil is dripping off the body of the pcv valve when i pulled it. The breather on the other valve cover has a new filter, no blockage. Thats the issue i think, so much suction that its pulling any drop of oil that gets close.

Glad to hear you're getting this good weather. I have a feeling we'll be paying for it soon enough.
