Latest project.

So this is the latest project I've been working on.

It's 30' across, 3 10' sections. Was 16' in the center section, the 2 side sections tapered back to 14'. I squared it off at 15' all the way across.

Finished up the stairs yesterday and started installing the posts for the railing. They're lagged into 4x4's which are lagged to the rim joist. Used GRK structural screws. They're assume, better than regular lag bolts. Come with a T30 torx bit and they're self drilling, no need to pre-drill.

Here's the new meter enclosure on the side of the house. I also moved the Comcast box from the back to the side. Ran power from the new meter enclosure under the deck and into the basement to the transfer switch (for generator). I used the same hole in the house that the cable use to go through. If I had punched a new hole in the side of the house I would have to add a disconnect outside because the inside run was over 6'.

They marked the underground utilities yesterday so hopefully DTE Energy will trench and install the new underground cable next week.

It was more involved than I thought, usually is. Obviously had to cut some joists back to 15' and extend others out to 15' and replace some. Deck was suspended at the house with a ledger board, which was pulling away from house and sagging. Had to re-anchor that to the brick and level it. Only stringer/beam under the 2x8 joists was out at 12' from the house. Installed 2x8 stringers at the 6' mark. End of deck was still wavy. They used 2x6's at the 12' mark and they were sagging in between the 4x4 posts. So had to replace them with 2x8's.

Have to install 8 more posts, time consuming getting them plum in both directions, then I can install the railing itself, Westbury Verticable. Google it, it's pretty cool looking, or wait for pics of the finished project. Put the facia on and it's done. Oh, almost. The center section of the deck is all hidden fasteners. Can't use them on the picture frame or stairs. The screws come with plugs made from the deck boards. Tap them in the hole over the screw and done. Oh, then put a 10' x12' metal top gazebo on top of it, then done. Until something else comes up.

Oh, and I haven't even uncovered and started the Chevelle yet. Of course it's been nothing but rain around here so I wasn't going to cruise around in it anyway.

Man, that looks good Hank. When do you want to start on replacing my deck? Next week works for me.

Hank70SS 06-09-2019 05:19 PM

Thanks Tony. Not sure when I can start on yours. I'm booked pretty solid for the next couple of years.

Perhaps you could work "second shift" up here?

Hank70SS 06-10-2019 09:05 AM

I can barely make it through the 1st shift, pretty sure a 2nd shift is out of the question.

Very Nice work

DTE hooked up the underground service. I just need to remove the old meter box and riser. Have a few more sections of railing to install then the facia. The facia boards are 12' long and 12" wide, I need to rip them all down before I can install them. Azek says not to let the facia overhang the rim joists and mine are 2x8's.

I resized the pics, made them higher than wide, wider than high and square. Site rotates them when I upload them. I rotated them first, site leaves them rotated. So you get rotated pics of the f'ing deck, I'm pissed. Forgot to upload some before.

Not sure if I'll leave the grill where it is or back up on the deck. Haven't put all the chairs back, we took some with us last week on vacation.
