Why old cars suck

Guy makes some good points: http://jalopnik.com/5551040/why-old-cars-suck

Though most of the problems he mentions can be easily corrected with modern components.

About the only point I'll give him is safety. And even that I'm not totally convinced of.

I can correct all these so called problems in less then a day. How many cars from the 1960's or 70's are anywhere near stock, not very many. I think he's just trying to get attention because he doesn't know anything about what he's talking about to put it nicely.

This might help convince you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joMK1WZjP7g

My 66 El Camino was the first year shoulder belts were offered. Something like 25 cars were shipped with the option. I can scarcely imagine driving without a shoulder belt anymore.

EFI, pointsless electronic ignitions, solid state ignitions, four-wheel disc brakes, overdrive transmissions, superior build quality, 100,000 mile warranties; modern cars are better in almost every way, except styling.

Since I got my El Camino running again, I keep comparing it to my '04 GTO. The El Camino seems sort of tossed together by comparison.

I think it would be tough to convince anyone on this site that their beloved cars they have 25k or more into suck. We love our cars is all I can say, or we wouldn't own them. So far my Camino is almost 44 years old and better than ever; I'd like to see any of the new cars last that long since nowadays they make them to be disposable. Oh, I almost forgot to say nice Camino Simonov!

Most of the problems they had could be fixed right on the side of the road. Try that with a new car. :)

Derek69SS 06-05-2010 11:03 AM

most of those points don't apply to my car. ;)

I get it. Most if not all people that have an "old" car also have a new car. Not alot of people that have a "new" car also have a old car ..... just a choosen few. My point, anyone that says old cars suck is either jealous or just doesnt get it.

First off anybody who would compare something from 40 or so years ago to todays tecnolagy and says it sucks is an idiot. Most people who have a clasic plan on doing or have done upgrades like disk brakes od trans or points to hei ignition. And nobody buys one based on its crash test rating.Im one of those people that believe tecnolagy is getting out of hand. The average cadi now has 27 on board computer systems.Comon.Does the word overkill come to mind.Simple is always better.I dont know about you guys but im geared up for when the crap hits the fan and some terotist gets a nuk into the us.My 84 gmc is built to not be afected by emp. That is if im one of the survivors. My truck will start and my family will head for the hills. That gto wont.Sorry only room for 5 and 1 dog.
