I prefer 17s, but even those are becoming obsolete as well... There will always be tires available for them, but not necessarily "good" ones.
I'm going to have to move up to 18s just to get the best rubber for them.
16s have very limited tire selection. They're mostly tall/narrow non-performance tires, and nothing that will fit a rim over 8" wide.
If you measure carefully and roll lips, you can fit 315s on 11" rims in the back of a '68-72.
