2,800 rpm's is not bad. You're just used to looking at 1,800 rpm's with a modern overdrive transmission. An hour at 2,800 is not going to hurt anything. The only thing I've noticed is oil consumption. After an hour or two at higher rpm's, these old engines push some oil. Just make sure to check it when you get to where you're going. There's nothing wrong, that's just the way they are. My first '64 Chevelle wouldn't burn or leak a drop of oil in months. If I got it out on the highway, it would push about a quart an hour of steady, high rpm highway speeds. My big block dually was the same way.
