Default RPM's

My Chevelle is a factory LS-5 454 and muncie-22 4speed. I know cars were different back in the day, but my chevelle tach reads about 2800 rpm's when cruising at 65. I know it has to do with the gears and all that.
However, it seems pretty high to cruise any distance at that constant 2800 rpm.
What kind of rpm do you guys turn on the highway??

Wish mine was only 2,800 RPM at 65. It's closer to 3,500. They didn't worry about gas mileage back then, performance was more important.

2,800 rpm's is not bad. You're just used to looking at 1,800 rpm's with a modern overdrive transmission. An hour at 2,800 is not going to hurt anything. The only thing I've noticed is oil consumption. After an hour or two at higher rpm's, these old engines push some oil. Just make sure to check it when you get to where you're going. There's nothing wrong, that's just the way they are. My first '64 Chevelle wouldn't burn or leak a drop of oil in months. If I got it out on the highway, it would push about a quart an hour of steady, high rpm highway speeds. My big block dually was the same way.

That's good info. Thanks. Down here in Texas with a no AC car in the summer, the only time I want to drive it during the day is on the highway. Was wondering if it is hard on that big block to run for periods of time at that higher constant rpm. My boat for example is designed for constant rpm's...different cam and all. In the car, I do tach closer to 3k at 70. I tend to just cruise at 65 and let all of the other fools pass me....until we meet at the light!

That's how they were run back when they were built. We'd get on I-75 and do 80 mph for hours going up north. Yes 2,800 is a little more wear than 1,800 but it isn't going to hurt it. Gas mileage is the worst part of it.

So true on the gas mileage.

I am still pretty original and want to keep it that way. However, my brother just had a 454 built up for his 1972 C10 truck. He wanted to put at M22 behind it but he may need to look into something like that, thanks for the link.

Holy Mackerel! They sure are proud of that thing! I can get a Lenco cheaper than that!
