Default after a terrible day with the chevelle yesterday worked on it today

so after a really bad day with the chevelle yesterday i got back in the garage and starting trying to tune it some more. I was told i had a miss fire and my rockers needed to be adjusted. So i thought i did it right and it was an epic fail. I got massive back fires when stepped on the gas and it was all over the place. I took my time following the distributor position 1 and 6 method. Made them all loose as can be and then adjusted from there. Started the car and i plugged in my timing light. Timing at idle was very high so i knocked it down in steps. Got it down to 18 degree at 900 rpms and max timing at 3100 rpms was 33 degrees. no more back fire no more miss from what i can tell. so my question to all of you is this. Is timing at 18 degrees idle and 34 degrees at 3100 rpms good for a 454? temps stayed right at 190 degrees the whold 45 mins the car was on. took it around the block and got on it pretty good and no more back fire. Suggestions?

For a manual trans car, 18* doesn't sound out of line. I intend to start around 17*-19* with mine once I am healed. Total timing might be a bit tame, I say get a cheap recurve kit and experiment. Up to 38* with pump gas, but see what it likes/runs best with. It may or may not like more total timing. But, seems like you have it very close.

I agree with carpoor, 18 initial is a good if you have no ping, spark knock. Closer to 38 total would also be better.

Notice how your temp stayed steady with the 18 initial timing, 190 is a good running temp. The more initial timing you give these engines the better they run and the cooler they run. Of course 18 is close to max before you get spark knock.

yeah i think it likes 18 degrees. because i let it sit for a long time to the point where the rad was cold and i didnt even get in the car and turn the key with no gas pedal and started right up on a like half crank of the key. and i pull the gas and man the torque is just there from idle until i let go of the gas its great. but i still have a lot more work to do!!
