Transmission trouble

Anyone have any experience with an '82 Camaro transmission ? It's an automatic, 250 ? and a 305 4 brl.

My son replaced the pan gasket and the day after it refuses to go into 3rd gear.

I am hearing that this trans. was replaced after 2 years with something better ?

I think it is the 200R and it was replaced by the 700R.

That makes sense, never heard of a 250 trans.
