Gas Tank removal and replacement

I'm replacing the gas tank in my Chevelle. I removed most of the fuel from the tank. Is it necessary to remove the rear bumper and lower valance to get the tank out? Or can it be removed w/o doing this? Has anyone done this and if so, can you provide tips to make the job easier?

I know it's not a Chevelle. I still love Chevelles so I hope that counts for something! (70 Olds 442 W30)
