paint of Vinyl?

ok so i am getting ready to paint the chevelle. I want to do the stripe on mine and i was on for fence about doing it on the hood and trunk. but i think i ruled that out. So i am thinking about the tripe on the side of the car that 69's came with. So i wanted to know did the cars come with a vinyl stripe or was it painted? and if you had someone what made custom vinyl right down the block from you and can even install it would you go that way or paint it?
