Guess it depends on what you are doing but either.

The long/short has nothing to do with the whether the motor will work in your application. This is merely a state of completion with a long block having heads already bolted on/included (plus a few other parts) whereas the short-block is just the block with the rotating assembly.

Do the short block if you are buying your heads separately or reusing what you may already have.

From the sound of it, you might be better off purchasing a motor complete from carb to oil pan. This can be done via a "crate" motor or buy looking up one of the many builders who could do this for you.

Not sure what all this has to do with the "Original block" for your car though....
