Ok, here is some more clarification now that I have an example of each fan in my posession...
Your common "772" fan: ![]() And a real deal 3999265 72' LS5 cooling fan vs. a 3999260 fan, used on SBC cars from what I can tell. (the shiny one is a 3999260 I restored and will not be using): ![]() ![]() ![]()

So just to recap, I am 99.9% sure that:
3947772 fan is correct for 1969 & 1970 HP big block cars. (L78, L89, LS6, L72) 3989095 fan was used on 1971 LS5 & LS3 3999265 fan is specific to 1972 LS5 & LS3 Hoping this will clear up some confusion for others down the line.
