I've done this on 8 different Chevelles...including the one John mentioned to our friend's '72.
WELL worth the small effort to complete this swap.
I wouldn't even think of wasting money rebuilding a stock Chevelle box.

Figure about $16 for the PS hose flare adapters, about $30 for the new rag joint, and $50-$75 for the '93-98 Jeep GRAND Cherokee box from a Pull-a-part or Ebay.
You can also buy this box brand new for about $150 BUT it must be from a GRAND CHEROKEE '93 to '98 model. You reuse the Chevelle pitman arm on the JGC box.
Best part about this whole swap...you'll never know if was done by looking at the steering box. Looks pretty much the same as the oem Chevelle one
