Default Fuel problem ?

I have a 64 Malibu, 283 with a Rochester 2bbl. The new problem is that if the engine sits for 1/2 hour after being run it requires a lot of cranking to get it restarted. It seems like the carb runs out of fuel . Once it starts it runs great.
Is there a check valve in the fuel pump that could be allowing the fuel to run out of the carb and back towards the fuel tank. Looking at the starter motor location I am not anxious to replace it anytime soon.
Thanks.

Yes they do have a check valve to prevent siphoning back out of the carb, Not sure why you mentioned the starter, fuel pump is out front of engine, not too bad to access. Or was that just a passing comment, no they're not fun to change laying on the ground under the car and they are heavy.

Hi Hank,
Thanks for the input. I am going to replace the fuel pump. I was concerned with burning up the starter motor from overcranking.
Thanks again.

Okay, good luck. When you pull the old pump you'll see the push rod that drives it. Crank the engine, I suggest by hand off the balancer bolt, unitl the push rod can be pushed up to it's highest point. Smear some axle or chassis grease on it, if the grease is thick enough it will hold the push rod up while you slide the new pump in place. Without the grease the push rod will fall down and make it hard to get the arm on the new pump in place. The grease will dissolve in the engine oil and not hurt anything.

Default Fuel Pump Replacement

Thanks for the pushrod/grease tip.
I checked Ground-Up Chevelle Parts and they have a good selection at fair prices.
Thanks again.

Honestly, for something like a fuel pump or any engine or suspension component I would go to the local parts store. You'll get the same thing for a lot less.

Default Fuel Pump Replacement

I bought the fuel pump from AutoZone. Your right, much cheaper buying that kind of stuff locally. From Ground up I was looking at gas pedal, rear bumper, that kind of stuff.
Trying to get the car ready for a 800 mile round trip to Maryland to visit grandkids and show the car at an Icecream place in Mt Airy. For a small town the turn out of cars is unreal. Small town America, Saturday night, Icecream,
Priceless.

Mt Airy, home of Andy Griffith. Stayed there, well just off freeway not in town, on a few trips to FL. Hope you get things straightened out.

Your right about the DC traffic, it is a nightmare. Moving from Annapolis to New Bern NC is a whole lot easier. But then again, you have to contend with senior citizen drivers, like me. My father-in-law who drove up to the age of 94, in Florida, was asked if he had been in any accidents, he answered no but, he didn't know how many he had caused.
Have a great day.
