Default Gasket or no gasket

My water pump to engine gasket is leaking and i will replace it this winter but my question is, what do others find most reliable seal wise? Gasket only, gasket with silicone, or just plain old silicone and no gasket for the surfaces?

I use a gasket with silicone on one side to hold the gasket in place while installing the pump. Works fine and never had a leak.
