Hi, I'm new to your Chevelle forum. I have a 1967 SS 4 speed 396 and when I go over 60 MPH my stick shift shakes, real bad. I need to slow down ,then things are ok again. I had the front end look at and all was ok. Could it be the drive shaft ? or maybe the clutch ? I need help. I just do not want to keep putting money into something that does not work .
Thank you Jeff 67

Welcome Jeff. You ask if it could be a few different things. I think it might help if you give a little more information. What is new, used, or you don't know. I am sure you will get some help on solving your problem. Good Luck.

Jeff, the first thing that I would check is the bolts that mount the shifter to the mounting plate and the bolts for the mounting plate that go into the transmission.

Hello thanks for getting back so fast to me. All the bolts on the shifter are good and tight. I just had the alignment done as well

Is it any speed over 60 or if you speed up to say 65 or 70 does it stop?
When is the last time you checked or replaced the u-joints in the drive-shaft?

X2, that would be my guess, or out of balance drive line

Is the shifter the only thing that vibrates or shakes? How is the trans mount? Tight and not broken?

Hello,, my car starts to shake around 55 mph ,the faster I go the more it shakes. I have not check the u-joints, but it does not shake or vibrate under 55 mph. The faster I go the hole car starts to shake.

Do you also feel vibration in your seat or at the steering wheel?
Could be something as simple as a tire out of balance... If it's only at the shifter...have the u-joints replaced AND get the driveshaft re-balanced. A local driveshaft service shop here only charges $70 for all that. Something I ALWAYS have done on any of my project cars. While your under there pulling the shaft...take a good look at the tranny mount to be sure it's not unbolted, broken or the rubber aged.

Be sure of the transmission mount. Some of these replacement mounts aren't 100% correct and can affect driveline angle just enough to throw things off. However, the driveshaft was my first thought when reading this. Then I wondered to myself weather or not you had a polyurethane transmission mount.
