Default Trouble opening door on '72 from outside

My passenger side door has always been a little difficult to open, button on outside handle must be pushed in as far as possible. Is there a way to adjust this ? Thought I would ask before digging into the door panel.

Sounds like the push rod in the button may be short or may be bent down to much. There are two different handles out there that look the same but the push rod has a different bent to it. The one that is bent to much down just barely strikes the door latch plate. I ran into that when I tried to put my handles on. I had one of each for some reason and had to change one of my door handles out for that reason to make the door open correctly.
