I currently have a 69 SS with all numbers matching thing. I was getting a little tired of always worring about hurting the engine. So in the back of my mind, I kicked the idea around of swapping the motor for something I wouldn't have to worry about and have some fun. I always wanted 427 but with the prices of a good core are getting a little out of reach and hard to find. So the idea of making one out of a 454 block sounded like a good idea and take all my components of my 396 to keep the cost down, that was the plan.
Well doing my morning Craigslist surf I found a 427. I picked it up last night. I'm pretty excited. It was everything I was looking for. I'm not sure what direction to take the motor. It would be nice to find nice aluminum heads, intake, carb. and roller it out but that's not going to happen. due to finances. If you guys have any suggestions for keeping the cost within reason and put a good strong street 427 together...I'm listening. Looking for opinions on the heads, cam selection, intake, carb, etc. I plan to leave the trans and rear end alone. 400 turbo 2600 stall with posi 3:31. 69 512 block bored .030 over. clean bores, should need just a hone Pistons are old L2268 Rods are dimples with 7/16 bolts 1063 heads light port 2.19 intakes and 1.72 exhaust (still trying to understand that one) Stock crank Stock iron intake I'm going to blame Tony from Flint for keeping the 427 number bouncing around in my head. Damn that gasser and Nova |

Thanks. It was a long drive last night. It will be a while until I get it in the car but at least I have it, and can accumulate parts when money is available. I'll keep an update on the progress with some pics.

You shit, you said you were going today to look at it. I just called you a few minutes ago to see how things worked out, answer your phone moron.
Glad it worked out for you. You'll have so much more fun with the 427 instead of always worrying about preserving the original 396. |

Thanks guys. I have to find a timing chain cover and 7" harmonic balancer. I got a 8" with the motor but no cover. I'm not into the chrome and aluminum. Would like to find a good stock one if possible.
I tore the motor apart yesterday. Everything looks good. I might be able to just get away a hone and clean up. the pistons are in great shape. The only problem their is the dome height. With these heads it be at 11.5:1 comp. Need to bring that down a point. The crank looks like it may need to be turned. One area has deep groove. it has been turned .010 already so it will have to go to .020. Next will be the heads...I'm not sure why they put a 2:19 intake in and left the stock 1:72 exhaust. Going to look into this. |

Checked the block to piston clearance and everything looks great. Sent the crank out to be turned and polished looks like it's going to be .020 .020 when done.
I did pick up a set of Solid rollers (Isky Red Zones) the only concern is they are offset (intake) the guy I bought them from (John Lukovich) said they will be fine for my stock setup. said he uses them all the time because they have less angle on the pushrod angle. Also picked up a set of Pro Magnum roller rockers. If I decide to keep the solid roller I'll put in a stud girdle. I'm in no hurry to get this thing done but when I find some parts...I pick them up. When I get all the parts and finally figure out the combination I'll post some pics. |
